Chapter 23

The elevator continued dropping, descending for long enough that Jessica was sure the shaft led deep underground. She didn’t fight against the hold the two bodyguards had on her. If Liao wanted to test her, then she would save her energy to pass the test.

“You don’t have to restrain me,” she said. “I won’t resist.”

“That’s easy for you to say right now,” Qiang replied. “But you may think differently once you see what’s waiting for you.”

She didn’t like the sound of that, but she refused to succumb to anxiety or fear. She had made it this far, having gone to Yi knowing she was taking a huge risk in essentially handing herself over to him. She still didn’t think she had made a mistake. Maybe she didn’t know that much about Liao, but she knew he wasn’t like any of the other Immortals. While they had chosen to play heroes at best and scions at worst, he had decided to be the villain. He was contrarian by nature. Chaotic. An outlier. Whether he agreed with her pursuits or not, she felt confident he would give her a fighting chance.

The cab slowed to a stop. Jessica’s heart rate barely changed as she waited for the doors to open. She was committed. Focused. Whatever Liao threw at her, she would get through it. And then he would tell her how to find Unity.

Or he would die.

The doors in front of her parted, bringing her face-to-face with Brie.

“You,” Jessica hissed, arms tensing against the grip Bo had on her, and causing Yun to poke the edge of the Kukri into her neck. Now she understood why they were holding her.

“Jessica,” Brie said. “I’m glad you decided to come. That was some escape you made from Sinner’s Row earlier today.” She smiled.

“Who the hell are you?” Jessica asked.

“You haven’t figured that out yet? You called me by name.”

Jessica glared at her. “You aren’t Cassidy. He was transferred out of here.”

“How many Jains have you run into?” Brie asked. “Every Shade has a source.”

“The source is copy-protected to avoid this bullshit.”

“Normally, yes. But you know by now that I’m special. Besides, there’s only one Cassidy here, so no rules have been broken.”

“I still don’t believe you.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Brie motioned to the guards. “Let her go.”

Bo and Yun stepped back, setting Jessica free. She stretched her arms but didn’t go for the Shade. “Why did you lead me here?” she asked. “Did Nevis put you up to it?”

“In a sense,” Brie replied. “After Captain Nevis confirmed that Cassidy had made the transit, she brought me into play. With some revisions.”

“Revisions?”

“The cat’s out of the bag, isn’t it, Jessica? You know what I am and what this place is. So do I. On a high level, it means you have no advantage over me, which is why I could have killed you back at the bar. But that wasn’t the goal.”

“Why not?”

“My orders are to neutralize you. Killing you isn’t neutralization, it’s extermination, and it leaves too much to chance.
